In case you haven’t been to the movies lately, here’s a teaser trailer of Wapakman, a comedy/sci-fi movie starring none other than Manny Pacquiao. Details follow.
As TeamPilipinas reports:
Manny Pacquiao will be having a new movie! According to showbiz news reports, the World’s 6th richest Athlete will be doing a new movie along side with Pussy Cat Dolls‘ Nicole Scherzinger and WWF’s Batista.
Manny Pacquiao’s upcoming movie will be entitled “Wapakman”. Wapakman is a comedy/science fiction (sci-fi) movie (Kung Fu Hustle style movie) about a single dad with five kids who accidentally acquired super powers. Will the boxing champ be the next box-office king? Only time will tell actually.
Apparently, Nicole Scherzinger of the Pussy Cat Dolls will be Manny Pacquiao’s leading lady. Also, producers are currently striking deals with WWF’s Batista, another half-blood Filipino to grace Manny Pacquiao’s Wapakman Movie.

So what is Battlefield Heroes? Why, a cartoony shooter of course, playable online! The action mainly focuses on capturing and holding flags, as well as the time-honored tradition of killing members of the opposing team.
The action is kept free through advertising and the ability to buy items to customize your character. The former does not appear in-game, while items do not grant the buyer any gameplay advantage.
So, if you honestly do not want to pay for a game (more so for those on Steam), why not sink your teeth into this? You can tell your friends all about Battlefield Heroes, and good times can be had! Just visit http://www.battlefield-heroes.com/ to download the game and start playing.
Take note though, the game is still in Open Beta, so you might encounter a few niggling bugs. Good luck!

So how does the battery of the Nokia N97 hold up? We drained the phone, charged it fully, and went about using its features, logging times and remaining battery bars. What follows is a record of what happened.
Before We Begin…
A few details first: the Nokia N97 uses the BP-4L battery. That also powers the Nokia E63 and E71, and is famous for its high 1500mAh capacity. The phone draws power through its proprietary USB port, so charging from a wall socket or computer USB port is possible. Yet, using the standard 4-pin USB port would’ve been much better, and this design choice requires the use of the bundled adapter to charge the phone with older Nokia chargers.
At the very least, the power-hungry N97 should at least have a decent battery life, breaking the questionable trend set by the N95 and N96’s 950mAh battery (the N95 8GB had a 1200mAh battery).

12:00 PM - I accidentally drop the phone! Arrrrgggggh! Luckily, it landed on a sock.
12:03 PM - I plug in the phone, leaving for some lunch and casual surfing. The phone’s display lights up, filling up with white, and the 7-bar battery life indicator on the upper right begins pulsing upwards.
2:07 PM - Still charging.
3:13 PM - Assuming the battery is full, I check the N97, finding the battery indicator stuck at two bars for whatever reason. I power on the phone and see all seven bars.
3:19 PM - Realizing that I forgot to put in the SIM, I do so, powering off the phone and turning it back on within 20 seconds. After answering “No” to “Continue using phone in offline mode”, the N97 starts up normally. Seeing that Bluetooth is on, I turn it off.
3:30 PM - I take some photos of the living room, trying to squeeze out some decent composition from my tremendously limited photography skills. Seven bars.
4:30 PM - Answered a couple of texts. Seven bars.
4:51 PM - More texts. Seven bars.
7:55 PM - Sent over 10 texts over the last three hours. Seven bars.
11:07 PM - 15 more texts sent up until this point. Seven bars.
Monday, June 29, 2009
12:02 AM - Spent exactly 17 minutes on the phone, distributed over three separate calls. Seven bars.
12:30 AM - I sleep, setting the phone for a 6:00 AM alarm. Seven bars.
6:21 AM - The alarm finally manages to wake me up. Seven bars.
6:43 AM - Surf a bit and check my mail through WiFi, all via the phone’s built-in browser, which supports flash by the way. Seven bars.
6:49 AM - Turn on Bluetooth to get three songs from my old phone. Seven bars.
7:00 AM - Bluetooth off, and songs saved. Seven bars.
7:06 AM - Now on the road. Activated the phone’s FM transmitter. Seven bars.
7:45 AM - After parking, I turn off the FM transmitter, keep the music playing, and switch to earphones. Jogging time! Seven bars.
8:33 AM - Playlist ends. Seven bars.
9:44 AM - Answered some texts, and transferred a file to my laptop via Bluetooth. Seven bars.
11:42 AM - Other than send a few texts, no feature of the phone was used. But we’re finally at six bars!
11:48 AM - Just noticed that network coverage at my work desk is weak. Could that be causing the battery to drain, as the phone works harder to maintain cellular connectivity? Six bars.
1:18 PM - Quick calls to locate friends at a nearby food court. Six bars.
1:37 PM - Took a photo of a lovely couple. No flash. Six bars.
2:41 PM - A friend uses the phone to receive a 40-second call. We are now officially at five bars, ladies and gentlemen!
7:13 PM - I send a text to some number to activate my Twitter Mobile. Five bars.
7:43 PM - I spend less than a minute on the phone, and notice that only four bars are left.
9:27 PM - Spent the last 20 minutes watching videos on YouTube, via 3.5G (HSDPA). Four bars.
9:43 PM - Activated the FM Transmitter, and cued up some songs for the drive home. Four bars.
10:24 PM - I cut the transmitter and music. Three bars left.
10:45 PM - Spent around two minutes watching a YouTube video. Three bars.
Tuesday, June 30, 2009
1:42 AM - Surfing a bit on WiFi before I sleep. Checking Twitter and looking for a Twitter client for the N97. Three bars.
2:10 AM - Time to sleep unfortunately. Alarm set for 7:30. We end the day with two bars.
7:14 AM - Good morning one bar!
7:58 AM - Five minutes of surfing through WiFi. One bar.
8:19 AM - Battery low warnings start. One bar.
10:38 AM - Simply too busy to use the phone for anything significant, though I imagine it’s now singing Alive or something. One bar.
11:24 AM - That’s it! Cueing up songs. I’ll see just how long the phone can play music on one bar.
11:43 AM - A moment of silence please. The N97 has finally died. Attempts to turn on the drained phone produce nothing, neither does plugging the phone into my laptop with the USB cable.
Obviously, I’m not a power user. I plan to check how phone will last when surfing via mobile broadband or WiFi, and while continuously playing music and video. Testing the battery life while tethering the phone to my laptop through Bluetooth is also a must.
For now though, one thing is clear: based on my (admittedly undemanding) usage, the Nokia N97 almost lasted for two days. A definite improvement over the N96!

Opera Software ASA (and Migs) were kind enough to share some data on Southeast Asia’s top users of the company’s mobile browser, Opera Mini. So what are the top-visited websites by local users of Opera Mini? What cell phones do they use? Find out why Nokia and Friendster should be happy.
From the State of the Mobile Web, May 2009 report:
Snapshot: Philippines

The above data should highlight an important priority for Friendster—make friendster.com more mobile friendly. Nokia should be happy that they dominate the cell phone usage list, and I disagree with Migs that the list is a sign that people are unsatisfied with Nokia’s default browser. This is based on speculation though: Opera Mini users have eagerly adopted the browser, and would install regardless of what phone they’re using.

Video: watch Winnie Monsod analyze the whole election automation phenomenon, pointing out the need for increased vigilance, and mercilessly highlighting the failure of the COMELEC to ensure the proper automation (to date) of an election automation system.
Yes, quite depressing indeed! Winnie Monsod rightfully insists that we the people should “ask the COMELEC to prepare a Plan B or a back-up plan”, basically a contingency to scale down or abort election automation if things aren’t fixed by the end of the year). She also asks the people to “be informed, ask questions, [and] … find the answers”.
Despite these sensible calls to action, I think she’ll be meet with apathy. The COMELEC will continue to bumble things, attempt to pass the buck by highlighting how the Filipino partner of winning election automation bidder backed out, and will facilitate an election failure come 2010. All while we remain content as unregistered citizens making money, going online, and having fun. Sigh.

Remember the Inovent Ilumina, the planned gadget billed as the Philippines’ first “LCD interactive television”? No updates have been forthcoming, but apparently inventor Brian Quebengco not only doesn’t take criticism well, he missed an opportunity to address valid criticism! Here’s why.
A couple of weeks ago, Rom Sedona of smoke.ph criticized Inovent for misrepresenting its product, while asserting that the promised functionality of the Ilumina is already possible through a PC TV tuner card—at a price much less than the planned P80,000 launch price.
So what was the alleged reply of Mr. Quebengco?
My dear friend, i am the founder of Inovent and the champion of the ilumina LCD iTV.
The dream of the ilumina LCD iTV is to launch our countries first Consumer Electronic Brand. This will have a Halo effect to the whole country and hopefully reverse the brain drain. And the only way to penetrate the market is to find a category that is upcoming. Hence, the LCD iTV.
We have so many supporting us now. But it is sad that you, a Filipino, is seeing this as just a “mass-up.” [sic]
I will focus all my energy in finding who you are, let all the media and press know about you, and make you famous as the Filipino who is talking crap about our only chance to have our own Consumer Electronic Brand.
There is so much you don’t know about the next wave of Interactive TV. You certainly haven’t done your research with Vizio, Sony, and Samsungs Interactive TV coming out in 2010.
I will make you famous! [emphasis mine]
I already started cringing when I read “champion”. Previously, I hoped that Inovent would come out with more substance and rely on less fluff as they develop their product for the market. If it was really Brian Quebengco behind the comment, he should listen to thegreatest’s advice:
Brian, if that truly is you (http://smoke.ph/?p=1192) you may be working too hard.
I’m sure your future customers and wholesale distributors will be happy to know that you are over-sensitive and tend to over react to a little criticism. You’re missing out on an opportunity to engage your critics directly and reach out to those people who are still on the fence, and trust me, there’s a lot of us. The problem sometimes with a single-minded vision such as yours is the tendency to believe your own hype.
Masyado ka bilib sa sarili mo.
Don’t get me wrong, confidence is a wonderful thing, when taken in moderation. You have to be able to back that up with skill and output. In the ocean you foresee yourself swimming in, you will encounter many critics and detractors (as I’m sure you already have, judging from this reaction) and this blogger’s words will seem kind compared to what you’ll deal with in the future, esp. when you seem to be rushing your vision to market/press.
Might you be relying a bit too much on the support of Filipinos who defend one of their own, regardless of its quality and promise? Let me draw your attention to one such product who thought the same:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HmIB2Wb-TA0
I wonder where it is now.
I know you guys have your vision, and it is a lofty one. While one could say we Filipinos should just leave you alone to perfect your product and just support you, never let the fact that just because we are not experts who haven’t ‘done our research’ convince you that as potential customers, WE KNOW WHAT WE’D LIKE TO SEE IN WHAT WE WILL PAY A HUNDRED GRAND FOR.
Cyberspace is dominated by the market you are trying to reach out to, the middle class who can afford your price tag. Don’t underestimate the value in reaching out properly to US, your future potential customers. You may need a little help in that department and I suggest you bring someone on the team who can address this better than you have. You seem tired and cranky, and that’s not what your future customers want to see leading a company that might potentially go bust and leave us in the lurch with a 100 thousand peso investment and no company to service it.
Suggest you start here:
http://www.scribd.com/doc/16217149/The-State-of-PRMarketing-by-Brian-Solis
Oh, and yes, I do know what I’m talking about. I myself started a company with an innovative product that I marketed well enough to get exported to the USA with orders in 3 other countries. Where did we fail? Quality. The filipino mentality of “pwede na yan” killed it. Also, a partner reacted to criticism much like you are doing now. Bad move brother. [emphasis mine]
There will always be people who criticize and demean your efforts, out of a good reason or simply because they can. You may never silence your critics, but there are better things to do than responding badly.

En route to and during the soft opening of the Resorts World Manila, the Nokia N97 was busy capturing photos. What follows are around 20 images of the event, taken without changing any settings of the built-in 5 megapixel camera (except for the flash)—or any photography skill whatsoever.
Each picture is more or less 500KB in size, and the default resolution of the N97 camera is 2952 x 1944 (or 5,738,688 pixels). Note that the picture of the various camera settings was taken with my trusty Lumix DMC-FS3. Click on a thumbnail to see any picture up-close, and click on what appears to see the full-size image:
So how does the camera hold up? Well, the N97 has the best camera phone I’ve ever used (it’s similar to the N82’s), but it definitely won’t give standalone cameras a run for their money. People planning to take photographs quickly as the moment happens will be disappointed as well. As with any other photography session under less-than-ideal lighting conditions, taking pictures with the flash off sometimes led to better results.
To be fair, I was shooting mostly from the hip, doing away with time-honored concepts like composition and keeping a steady hand. (Ok fine, I’ll admit: I’m not exact the best photographer in the Philippines).
To be even more fair, I plan a series of shots under good lighting and hopefully with better composition, the point being to show what the camera can produce under the right conditions. Anyone know a place in or near Manila where great vistas are easy to come by?

Running the Ovi Suite installer of the Nokia N97, it’s clear that Nokia’s PC software could use improvement. A lot of improvement.
At first glance, it’s nice to see the installer provide the user with some options during setup. Install Nokia Photos? Leave out Nokia Music? But in hindsight, this approach—separating the various facilities into different applications—does not work. Not only does it come off as cumbersome (What, I have to install all of this?!), it lets users potentially miss out on functionality required to maximize their phones.
So the first improvement Nokia needs to implement is to integrate everything into one neat package. Let one program manage connections with compatible Nokia phones, be responsible for syncing media, info, and other content, and allow access to Nokia’s Ovi.
This integration keeps everything simple and accessible, and provides more incentive for people to switch to Nokia’s software. People definitely like using one app to do many things, especially if it does those things really well.
Another thing Nokia should work on is the responsiveness of its software. Most of the manufacturer’s phones are known for immediately responding to user input, with the higher-end models (like the N97) enjoying an improving record. Now it’s time to concentrate on making things faster on the PC.
Nokia’s desktop software should launch more quickly, especially since it encourage users to set it to start when Windows loads. There’s no need to load the whole she-bang immediately, just the parts needed to sync data with the phone (and you can load stuff in the background). Forget about giving your software distinctive visuals—they use memory and resources unnecessarily.
It’s clear Nokia wants more people to use its desktop applications, which eventually lead to the manufacturer’s Ovi Suite of online services. For that to happen though, the software needs to be simple, straightforward, integrated, and fast.

There are no definite figures yet for the local consumer, but we can derive some speculation from Microsoft’s Windows 7 pricing announcement, made yesterday. Details follow.
Here’s how much various editions of Windows 7 will cost, when it makes its debut this October:
- Home Premium $199.99
- Professional $299.99
- Ultimate $319.99
So can we assume prices of P10000, P15000, and P17500 respectively? (Ouch!) Your guess is as good as mine, so stay tuned for updates as they become available! Here’s to hoping Microsoft Philippines will come out with more local-friendly prices.

Yesterday afternoon saw the official launch of the Nokia N97, and I was finally able to test the phones features for the first time, all while snapping some up-close pics. Those and some first impressions follow.
Basically, think of the N97 as a more powerful Nokia 5800, with a QWERTY keyboard that slides out from underneath. The sizes of both phones are practically similar. The N97 also breaks the long tradition of N9x phones that barely last a day, thanks to its use of the same high-capacity battery as the E63 and E71.
Future owners should watch out: this phone attracts fingerprints like honey does bees. They should take care of the bundled accessories, as the N97 uses a proprietary port for its data cable and charger. At least the included adapter lets it work with those big- and small-pin standard Nokia chargers.
In the box:
- Nokia N97
- 1500mAh battery
- Charger
- Charger adapter
- USB data cable
- Manual and warranty docs
- Earphone-remote handsfree kit
- Nokia Ovi Suite installer
- Wipe cloth
- Detachable stylus you can loop into the phone

That’s exactly what Twistedfork did, making his own Con(gressmen) Ass(holes) poster available here. The full-size version is very large, large enough for actual printing on poster-sized paper. Twistedfork lists the Congressmen with aye votes, as well as their respective constituency.

Yes, Twitter is popular (it was used to chronicle the passing of HR 1109), but that doesn’t mean you have to die over it!
A teenage girl was electrocuted after dropping her laptop into the bath as she twittered in the tub.
Police said they believed Maria Barbu, 17, had tried to plug in her laptop with wet hands after the battery died during a long session on social networking site Twitter as she took a soak at her home in Brasov, central Romania.
She was found dead by her parents with the laptop lying next to her.
Do you use your laptop in the bathroom? Personally, I do when I have to go number 2. But even if I had a bathtub, I would never use a laptop while taking a bath! Unless, of course, I was rich enough to have a computer display integrated into the bathroom wall, using a waterproof wireless keyboard with touchpad to control everything. Yeah, dreams are indeed free.
